Apprenticeship Training Program
Purpose
Apprenticeship is a valuable training system which provides New York businesses with a well-trained, highly-skilled workforce by combining structured on-the-job training with related technical instruction. The Apprenticeship Training Program allows apprentices to learn a new trade while continuing to earn wages and, upon successful completion, provides a nationally recognized portable work credential. Apprenticeship programs are conducted by businesses, jointly by businesses and unions, or by groups of businesses. The State Department of Labor registers apprenticeship programs, working with businesses across the state to develop a skilled workforce.
Eligibility
Apprenticeship programs can be operated by
businesses in both the private and public
sectors. Potential sponsors may
start a program in currently existing
trades or work with Apprenticeship
Training staff to potentially develop a
new trade.
