Purpose

The Olympic Regional Development Authority manages the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface Mountain and Gore Mountain ski areas, the Olympic Sports Complex, the Olympic Jumping Complex, and the Olympic Center (utilized for skating and hockey events, shows and concerts, as well as conventions and conferences).

ORDA creates several revenue generating opportunities for the community through events and programs on an annual basis. These events attract additional guests and customers to area hotels, restaurants, and the business district. During the winter, ORDA hosts a number of major events that bring television and media exposure to Lake Placid and all offerings in the surrounding area. For instance, this November, Skate America came to the Olympic Center, in December we had World Cup Bobsled and Skeleton at the Olympic Sports Complex and the North American Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Jr. Championships at the Olympic Jumping Complex, in January, World Cup Freestyle at both Whiteface and the Olympic Jumping Complex, in February, the Lake Placid Loppet and Empire Winter State Games, in March, NCAA National Championships at the Olympic Center, and the U.S. Alpine National Championships at Whiteface. The Corporate Marketing department offers a variety of sponsorship agreements in coordination with these events, programs, and the Olympic Venues.

The ORDA Marketing Department also drives many initiatives which bring additional visitors to the area and increase revenue potential for the Olympic Region. Working closely with lodging properties and local businesses, ORDA reaches out to potential customers through groups sales efforts, lift ticket and activity voucher programs, and co-op marketing campaigns.
